 | | | | | | | | | | Am I really sure I want to cut the roof off! This was the point of no return, to fix the roof or replace it, that was the question? Here we go! |
 | | | | | | | | | | This was the mould bought from the Rochdale Owners Club, a phase 1 roof so the rear opening hatch was none existant on this mould, just a rear screen! |
 | | | | | | | | | | You can see the cut lines I was going to make, half way down the pillars and the first cut just behind the sunroof, before a second cut closer to the rear join. |
 | | | | | | | | | | I made marks on the car scuttle points and heater intake and measured the distance to the roof top prior to cutting it off. This helped with the position of the new roof. |
 | | | | | | | | | | A few final measurements before we started hacking it off, measure twice cut once! |
 | | | | | | | | | | The roof came off really easy, I cut around the inside of the roof tubing and then made a slot above the tubes to prise off the reinforcment around them. |
 | | | | | | | | | | You can see how easily it prised off from around the tube in this picture. |
 | | | | | | | | | | This was my father in law helping me with the other side. |
 | | | | | | | | | | The tubes were in a pretty good state for a 40 year old car, a little cleaning though before the new roof went on. |
 | | | | | | | | | | Roof tubes cleaned and the fibreglass pillars cut down to about halfway. |
 | | | | | | | | | | I placed the roof on and cut through the new moulding and the old pillars to get a tight joint. |
 | | | | | | | | | | Once all the pillars were cut and new roof placed on, I drew a line from the inside of the roof moulding along my pre cut line on the Rochdale roof, Once cut I placed it on and secured it with clamps. |
 | | | | | | | | | | I then secured the poles to the new roof and placed resin soaked strips across the joins around the roof to hold it tightly in position. |
 | | | | | | | | | | Once all the iside was cured I put a 3 inch grind angle on the roof join and pillars. |
 | | | | | | | | | | This is me making sure the grind angle was even across the whole roof. |
 | | | | | | | | | | The finished grind angle ready for some cloth. |
 | | | | | | | | | | Doing the pillar grind angles prior to putting the cloth on. |
 | | | | | | | | | | 3 stepped layers of woven cloth were applied and topped with peel ply to soak up the excess resin and give a better surface to work the final finish. |
 | | | | | | | | | | All the cloth in place and waiting for the epoxy to cure. |
 | | | | | | | | | | Cloth cured and ready for working the final profile. |
